  • Andrea Unrau

    Andrea Unrau (she/her) is a musician, educator and researcher with a passion for bringing high quality creative arts education to children and adults of all ages and abilities. As SoM’s Director of Programming, Andrea designs and implements community music programs that centre student strengths, interests and needs. 

    With a background in Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour, Andrea spent 5 years at the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind, studying early musical development in children and the many cognitive and social benefits of music education. Her goal is to find creative methods to share musical joy with young people with diverse learning needs. Andrea is also an active musician, performing regularly around Vancouver and Western Canada.

  • Dan Cleland

    EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

    Dan Cleland has over 30 years of experience within the music industry. His path has included work as audio engineer, production manager, tour manager, and music school board member. Following his tour management of such celebrity musicians as Avril Lavigne, the Barenaked Ladies, Norah Jones, and The Chieftains, Dan has come to work as a major member of Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan’s management team. Dan brings a wealth of energy, industry knowledge, and professional acumen to his work, and though he is undoubtedly a workaholic, he does maintain one of his favorite hobbies as a pilot, as well as his own endeavors in music.

  • Caitlin Dutchak

With a strong passion for creating positive workplace cultures, Caitlin plays a pivotal role in ensuring that employees thrive and that the company’s core values are upheld. Having worked in a variety of industries, Caitlin is known for her strategic approach, focusing on aligning talent strategies with business goals. She excels at navigating complex employee concerns, improving team dynamics, and fostering environments where both individuals and organizations can grow. In addition to her HR expertise, Caitlin is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace. She continuously seeks innovative ways to enhance employee engagement and create a supportive and productive work environment. With a keen eye for detail and a focus on results, Caitlin is dedicated to driving continuous improvement in all aspects of HR operations—while still managing to keep her sense of humor intact.

  • Emily Oswald

    DIRECTOR DEVELOPMENT

    Emily is a professional fundraiser and nonprofit leader with over a decade of experience. Emily earned a BA in Social Sciences from the University of Ottawa, followed by a Post-Graduate Certificate in Event Management from Algonquin College. She now lives with her family just outside of Kitsilano, on the unceded territories of thexwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

    With a deep commitment to community service and fostering inclusive, anti-racist and creative spaces, Emily has worked with numerous nonprofit organizations over the past decade. Though she does not perform much anymore, Emily still teaches musical theatre to children at Lights Up Musical Theatre Schools.

    As a student, teacher and parent, she has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of artistic expression on young minds. She is deeply honoured to be part of the SoM team and to help change the life of every young artist who walks through our doors!

  • Jackie LaFontaine

    DIRECTOR FINANCE

    Jackie holds both a Diploma in Financial Management from BCIT and earned her professional designation as a Certified General Accountant in 1995.

    Jackie brings a wealth of experience to the school having enjoyed a 30+ year career working in the travel and entertainment industry; most notably for the Vancouver Canucks, Vancouver Grizzlies, Uniglobe Travel and the Pacific National Exhibition.  Following the successful sale of Uniglobe in which she played a pivotal role, Jackie took a short sabbatical to recharge and ultimately seek out a new position in which she could give back to the community.  Having a lifelong passion for music and also playing guitar for fun since childhood, SoM was a perfect fit!  In addition to music, Jackie is also passionate about health and fitness, earning her 1st degree black belt in Taekwon-do in 2015.

  • Stephen Fisk

    Stephen joined SoM in September 2002, recognizing the great potential that Sarah’s vision for the school could have upon the future of music education. Over the years Stephen has become a rigorous champion of all things innovative at SoM, mentoring peer dialogue, forward looking teaching practice, inclusive administrative practice and modeling the community building values inherent in SoM’s motto ‘find your voice’. 

    As Director of Operations, Fisk stewards staff and students alike in the artistic and organizational abundance that SoM’s culture affords to all. With his extensive background in liberal arts and all things musical, Stephen remains active as a professional performing artist, writer, producer and teacher of over 35 years. Fisk holds degrees in Arts, Composition and a Masters in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston.

    Alexandra Clancy is a movement artist currently living and creating on the ancestral lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səl̓ilw̓ ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, in the place now commonly known as Vancouver. She is a proud alumna of Jacob’s Pillow, SFU, DJD, and Tapestry Dance Company. Her work has been presented at Jacob’s Pillow, New Works, Feats Festival of Dance, Playhouse, 12 Minutes Max, Eighth and Eight, & DOTE. Alexandra loves working at Sarah Mclachlan School of Music helping youth explore the relationship between music and movement and fostering spaces that build community and creative expression.

  • Boris Favre

    Caroline is a singer, songwriter, and music educator based in Vancouver, BC. She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area playing the harp, going to folk jams, and singing with the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

    Caroline loves connecting with students, exploring music fundamentals using creativity, and building confidence and relationships through music. 

    In addition to her work at SoM, Caroline teaches voice, performs original music, and leads community music workshops. She is certified in Orff Schulwerk and holds a BA in Anthropology and African Studies from UBC.

    Ian Bevis is a singer, songwriter and producer from Vancouver BC. Ian originally began producing and performing music with his band Bear Mountain, and has toured and performed extensively throughout North America. In addition to producing music, Ian has honed his craft as a songwriter, co-writing songs with Canadian artists such as Nelly Furtado, Jesse Reyez, and Nate Ferraro. His work reflects his deep fascination with the intersection of acoustic and electronic music, driving his pursuit of innovative songwriting possibilities through technology. While teaching, Ian aims to bring a positive and multi-faceted approach to learning new techniques to produce music, while fostering a supportive environment to inspire students.

    James Moore is a Vancouver based electronic producer who attended Sarah McLachlan School of Music as a student. While James mostly makes EDM, he's also played in rock bands as a guitarist and a bassist.   • Jeremy Holmes

    Jeremy is an upright and electric bass player who loves playing live and recording with such diverse artists as Jim Byrnes, Joey (Sh*thead) Keithley of DOA, Steve Dawson, Cousin Harley, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Russell DeCarle, Alison Russell, Ndidi Onukwulu, Jill Barber, Suzie Ungerleider and many other artists from the UK, USA and Canada.  He has worked with such producers as Steve Dawson, Howard Redekopp and Ryan Guldemond and as an actor/musician in The Arts Club Theatre's production of Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story. Jeremy has studied at The Banff Centre for The Arts, has a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Capliano University and has toured clubs, festivals and theatres throughout Canada, the US, and Europe.

    His instrumental band, Flatback, in which he plays mandolin, received a Canada Council grant to record its album, The Harmonic Circus.

  • Julia McDougall

    Julia McDougall is a songwriter, musician and music educator who is privileged to live and work on the unceded stolen ancestral territories of the Coast Salish people. For the past ten years she has worked at SoM as both an educator as well as program coordinator of “Hive Fridays,” an initiative that serves students ages 19-24. Julia is also a teacher with the Burnaby School District and works primarily in alternative education; she has degrees in both composition and education from Simon Fraser University. Julia is currently working under the moniker Yawn, a solo, synth dream-pop project. Julia believes that art has the power to pave the way for truth, equality and social justice and is a committed ally to marginalized BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ communities.

    Raul grew up in El Salvador and moved to Canada when he was 13, living in Victoria until moving to East Vancouver in 2005. He is a self-taught turntablist, spinning vinyl for over 20 years. Raul currently works as an instructor at the Sarah McLachlan School for Music and with the Metaphor Crew who do youth empowerment workshops in schools. He collaborates regularly with Curtis Clearsky and the Constellationz, C.R. Avery, Kia Kadiri, Ndidi Cascade, and Ruby Singh and has opened for bands like Ozomatli, the Boom Booms, Fishbone and Wyclef Jean. He also works as a music consultant at Highlife Records on Commercial Drive.

    Richard is a Vancouver, BC based drummer who has been very active in the Canadian music scene for several years.     Over the past decade and a half, JUNO-nominated percussionist Robin Layne has steeped himself in rhythmic traditions from around the world.   • Rosa Alcantara

    Rosa is a multi-disciplined artist, fundraiser, and academic, born on the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Sníchim speaking peoples lands (Burnaby). She's a vocalist and songwriter in the local 5-piece girl group NADUH. NADUH has shared the stage with major artists like Jacob Banks and Raveena and toured internationally in the UK, Mexico and the USA. She received a Master of Science in Forestry at UBC, following an indigenous-science approach to her research. She also is the founder and designer of the fashion brand Local Trash, which uses second-hand materials to make stylish and upbeat one-of-one clothing and accessories. She has been fundraising for 5+ years with two bands, and at the non-profit Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre that supports folks who have experienced gender-based violence

As a teacher, she is passionate about inspiring a love of music in her students, at any age, and in every style.

She is a graduate of MacEwan University’s Bachelor of Music program, and is a rising star in Edmonton’s jazz and R&B scenes, having performed at numerous iconic local venues. Her passion for music stems from her father playing records in their household, and as a child she played piano, drums, and saxophone before settling on the guitar. Morgan is passionate about inspiring and motivating students, sharing her love for music, and encouraging others to explore their creative potential.

    Nathan is a versatile musician, songwriter, producer, and music director. He has performed alongside many prominent local acts, contributing his talents on guitar, pedal steel, keys, and vocals, both on stage and in the studio.   • Reid Contreras-Woelfle

    Reid is a musician, composer, and music educator. In the past year, he has been composing for ensembles in Edmonton, Toronto, Lunenburg, and Vienna. His artistic practice was also recognized by MacEwan University in awarding him the Wind Energy Commission Award in Music Composition. As an artist, Reid continues to experiment with different styles and techniques, and he is always striving to create new and exciting musical experiences for the young artists he teaches.

  • Angela Proulx

    Angela is a musician and songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta who began manifesting a reality as a performer from a young age by setting up audiences of stuffed animals to sing for. As a child Angela’s musical tastes ranged from Britney Spears to Metallica and as a teen she settled on the bass as her primary instrument after attending a Kool & The Gang concert and experiencing what she calls a “funk awakening.” Over a decade ago Angela founded her pop/R&B project called Mercy Funk, and continues to co-write and co-lead the band. She began teaching music in 2009 and Angela remains endlessly inspired and fulfilled by the hundreds of students she’s had the pleasure of working with.

With years of experience working with children and youth in diverse settings, she is committed to building strong connections between students, parents, and instructors, fostering growth and creative musical expression.     Zach is a musician, composer, and educator. Born and raised in Edmonton, he has been studying music since he was eight years old, and has been performing professionally since he was a teenager. His passion for music brought him to MacEwan University, where he completed the Bachelor of music program, majoring in Composition. Zach has played venues across Alberta and British Columbia as the lead guitarist in the band “Misfortune Tellers”. As a composer, his interests lie in blending contemporary Jazz with elements of traditional North African & Middle Eastern music. Zach is excited to share his curiosity and love for music with his students as a part of the SoM team!
