NEW WEST

at Douglas College

Sarah McLachlan School of Music (SoM) is a registered charity dedicated to providing barrier-free music education for children and youth who may not otherwise have access to traditional music programs. Each year, more than 1,100 students find a welcoming and supportive community at our campuses in Vancouver, New West, and Edmonton.

In Fall of 2024, we announced a partnership with Douglas College, as host to our new programming space. “SoM New West” provides a more central location for our families and access to a beautiful, state-of-the-art space for our students. This location offers group classes, private lessons, performance opportunities, and camps. Students also benefit from a healthy snack, access to transportation support and guest artists regularly visit to introduce a diverse range of musical styles.

At SoM, we believe in the power of music to inspire, uplift, and create lasting change. That’s why our programs are completely free for all students, made possible through the generous support of our donors.

Where Young Artists Find their Voice

Life at SoM is vibrant, engaging, and tailored to your interests. Each week, students spend one to two hours in relaxed, student-driven classes led by professional musicians. It’s a space to explore your creativity, work collaboratively, and grow as a musician—all while enjoying our snack program, safe spaces, and mentorship opportunities.

NEW WEST

All students, at all campuses, begin with our foundational Musical Discovery program.

Pick your favourite instrument and learn through discovery! Choose a focus instrument like guitar, piano, percussion, marimba, ukulele or band and songwriting and play with people who share your passion. Guided by SoM’s musical mentors, build friendships and musical skills through these student-centered group classes. Build foundational skills and musical knowledge here, in order to join other classes or play your own music independently.
