Meet Aisha McCarnan

What do you do at SoM?

I’m a teaching artist at the Surrey location- teaching songwriting, producing and artist development & I am a Front Desk Assistant at the Vancouver location

What do you do outside of SoM?

Outside of SoM, I am well known by my artist name, AHSIA ("uh - sigh - ah")  My genres include Afro-Soul, R&B and Hip-hop. I prioritize my platform to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and to advocate for anti-oppression and black empowerment. Along with performing and songwriting, I also produce music as well and have had the opportunity to do so all over the lower mainland as well as in certain parts of the states. 

What’s your favorite memory at SoM?

As an artist, I love inspiring and teaching them what I have learnt from my own experiences. However, my favorite memories are when I get to engage with my students and get to know them on a personal level. Laughing with my students every day and building connections with them is the most fulfilling part of my job, especially when I see them grow creatively as individuals.

Is there anything you want others to know about you?

During COVID I found myself struggling to find things to write about so I decided to explore other creative outlets such as sewing, cooking, baking and sign language!
