Student Stories

“I count myself as being extraordinarily lucky to have been a part of SoM, not just because of the five years of happy memories created in the senior percussion class (and one year in the youth choir), but also the fact that it was at SoM that I was first introduced to Cuban percussion, which has become my field of work and study. I’m now working towards my Masters in Ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, England, and still can’t wrap my head around the fact that if it weren’t for that introduction I probably wouldn’t have even considered this as an option. I am so thankful to all the wonderful people at SoM for creating such a fantastically supportive environment; More than 5 years after graduation now and I still feel welcome.”

“This music program has played a huge role in my life, providing a place for me to sing and perform for others, and I will never forget the experiences I have had with choir. While I was with the choir they became like a family to me. Thank you for your generosity and all of the hard work that the staff do year round to give kids like me such an amazing experience.”

- Riley, Youth Choir

“I don’t even like to speculate on where I would be in my life now if it weren’t for everyone at the School of Music, I’m now experiencing daily life in another community of musicianship and I couldn’t be happier. There are no words to say how grateful I am for having been a part of this, without a doubt SOM changed the path of my life.”

- Marlena, Piano & Youth Choir

“The Sarah McLachlan School of Music is not only a music program, it is a life changing experience for many. The program has brought colour to many young lives, and successful challenges for many to experience. The program brings unity for many inner city schools and it brings strong friendship with teachers, staff and students. Being part of the SOM program has given me confidence, motivation, perseverance, and determination to exceed in my musical career and within my life…it has been an incredible journey.”
